Zahn Learning Center Open Hours: Guatemalan Huipils
- Event Date: Saturday, October 11, 2014
- Time: 1:00 pm–4:00 pm (CDT)
- Location: Zahn Learning Center, Spurlock Museum, 600 S. Gregory St., Urbana, IL
- Cost: $2 per crafter
Enhance your Spurlock Museum experience with hands-on activities in the Zahn Learning Center. During ZLC Open Hours (ZLC OH), visitors of all ages enjoy engaged learning through exhibit or cultural-related crafts, and access to teaching artifacts and books. $2 per crafter to cover materials. Weekend parking is free in non-metered, non-reserved spots in lot D 22, behind the Museum (enter lot on Oregon).
Explore the new Artists of the Loom: Maya Weavers of Guatemala exhibit, then design a huipil with images from the artifacts on display, including iron-ons and stickers of bees, flowers, and birds. ZLC staff will help visitors learn about the iconic images through a variety of crafting options. Will your huipil be a fabric miniature? Play-clothing plastic sheeting? Made from fused perler beads? A custom-colored shrink plastic piece? Or simply arranged window clings on an oversized huipil?
