Performance

Rhythms and Dances of Africa

The Brown Center for World Music and the Spurlock Museum welcome master Ghanaian drummer Midawo Gideon Alorwoyie and his Afrikania Cultural Troupe for a performance of traditional drum and dance in the Knight Auditorium of the Spurlock Museum. Mr. Alorwoyie is from the Anlo-Ewe region of coastal Ghana, where the people’s complex drum styles and folklore document their history back to pre-colonial times. As a master drummer for many “Habobo” (drum and dance societies) and a “Midawo” (high priest) of the Ewe cult, a traditional society, he is recognized as one of Ghana’s foremost virtuosos of traditional music and dance. Mr. Alorwoyie is the founder and artistic director of the Afrikania Cultural Troupe of Ghana and the Chicago- based African-American Unity Ensemble.
