Lecture by Lucille Chia
Associate Professor of History
Columbia University
For over twelve hundred years, the Chinese have been printing books, calendars, official documents, pictures, money, religious charms, and many other materials. What kind of printing technologies did they use? What kind of paper? And who used these printed materials? Were they only accessible to the educated who could read and write, or was “print culture” one shared by both the literate and illiterate in traditional Chinese society? Lucille Chia’s talk will survey these fascinating issues.
