Contemporary Conversations: Gender Bending—Exploring Nonbinary Genders in World Cultures

The Spurlock Museum’s Contemporary Conversations program series instigates conversations about contemporary cultural issues, themes, and ideas relevant to the University of Illinois and the C-U community. Gender Bending is being presented as part of Contemporary Conversations and in connection with the current exhibit In Her Closet—How to Make a Drag Queen. Gender Bending is an hour-long panel conversation that explores nonbinary gender identity across the globe. Panelists include Paul Michael Atienza, Ph.D. student in Anthropology and In Her Closet curator; Dr. Teresa Barnes, Director, Center for AfricanStudies, Associate Director of History, and Gender and Women Studies; and Mara Thacker, Associate Professor and Librarian for Global Popular Culture and South Asian Studies.
