From the Beyond: A Celebration of Spirits

Our afternoon concerts celebrate the Day of the Dead in music and story. The evening concert of multicultural stories “from the other side” features ghosts, spirits, haunts, and all things that “go bump in the night.” The evening concert is for audience members 14 and above only.

Noon Music by Sones de Mexico
2:00 PM Storytelling by Tersi Bendiburg
7:00 PM Storytelling by Tersi Bendiburg, Janice Del Negro, Dan Keding, Kim Sheahan

Sones de México Ensemble specializes in son, a rich and lively Mexican music tradition and its many regional styles, including huapango, gustos, chilenas, son jarocho and the roots of mariachi music. Audiences watch as the group works its way through a collection of over twenty-five folk string, percussion, and wind instruments, bright four-part vocal arrangements and acrobatic dance demonstrations.

Tersi Bendiburg is a bilingual storyteller who tells tales gathered from her native Cuba, as well as through research and travels to Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central America. Spanish phrases and songs are woven throughout the stories, which are accompanied by musical instruments such as maracas, castanets, kalimba, and guiro.

Dan Keding is a versatile, nationally recognized teller. He performs traditional world folktales, personal narratives of his boyhood in Chicago, and ghost stories, as well as superbly crafted original pieces. A well-respected ballad singer, he also accompanies himself on guitar, banjo, and spoons.

Janice Del Negro takes joy in re-imagining stories from traditional folklore. Her straightforward yet elegant delivery of supernatural, romantic, and eccentric tales for all ages makes forgotten magic familiar once again.

Kim Sheahan is the Spurlock Museum’s Assistant Director of Education and resident storyteller. She performs folktales from around the world for audiences of all ages throughout central Illinois.

This event is supported in part by the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency.
