The history of the University of Illinois is filled with stories of innovation and inspiration. Join the Spurlock Museum for an afternoon highlighting some of these stories. At 2:30, we will screen 3 short documentaries about students, artists, researchers, and educators.

• A Home of Their Own
• Illinois Icons: Lorado Taft
• Making Their Mark

The short documentary A Home of Their Own discusses aspects of African-American student life in the 1930s and 40s. Illinois Icons: Lorado Taft celebrates the artist who sculpted Alma Mater. Making Their Mark features the pursuits of 3 highly accomplished University women: Jean Driscoll’s leadership in training wheelchair racers in Ghana, May Berenbaum’s award-winning work in entomology, and Donna Cox’s renowned achievements in computer art.

This event is part of the Spurlock’s Third Thursday Series highlighting University history and is held in conjunction with the Spurlock Museum’s temporary exhibit Knowledge at Work: The University of Illinois at 150. This exhibit explores the history of campus as a community of educators, researchers, and students engaged in learning, research, and public service. Learn about the contributions of a wide variety of people and groups to campus history and ways the University has changed how it relates to the people it serves. The exhibit runs through December 21, 2018.

A Home of their Own was produced by the U of I Public Affairs Video Shop. The other 2 documentaries are productions by Tim Hartin, Kaitlin Southworth, and Alison Davis Wood of the Big Ten Network.
