Film: India's Daughter

The recently released BBC documentary India’s Daughter, by Leslee Udwin, captures the story of the brutal rape and murder of a young medical student on a bus in Delhi in December 2012. Banned by the Indian Government, the film has raised important questions about violence against women.

A panel discussion will follow the screening, examining the documentary and its ban by Indian Government through the lens of law, media, history, and gender politics. The panel includes Rini Bhattacharya Mehta, Suvarna Menon, Julie Laut, and Rachel Lauren Storm (Assistant Director, Women's Resource Center) and is moderated by Mara Thacker (Assistant Professor, International and Area Studies Library).

Presented as part of National Sexual Assault Awareness Month and International Week at the University of Illinois, this event is co-sponsored by the International and Area Studies Library, Women's Resource Center, Center for South Asian and Middle Eastern Studies, U.S. Department of Education Undergraduate International Studies and Foreign Language Program, Center for Global Studies, and the Spurlock Museum.
