Panel: "The Long Journey Home: The Story of Latino Migration into Central Illinois"

Miguel Keberlein, an advocate for immigrant and workers’ rights, and Angela Wiley, an associate professor of family studies, will lead a discussion about these issues that will be moderated by Brant Houston (Knight Chair for Investigative Reporting). Together they will focus on the transformation from seasonal workers in the fields and factories in Illinois to permanent members of the community with businesses and jobs – and the resulting change in demographics and culture in both immigrant and non-immigrant communities. In addition to the discussion, the event will highlight oral histories with photographs and as well as the Midwest Center for Investigative Reporting’s work on migrant worker camps.

This Illinois Humanities program is supported, in part, by a competitive Latino Americans: 500 Years of History grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and the American Library Association (ALA). This second installment of a six-part series about the past, present, and future of Latinos in the United States is presented in partnership with the Department of Journalism at the University of Illinois in Urbana/Champaign, the Midwest Center for Investigative Reporting, and Illinois Public Media.
