Research Remarks
Published Description | From Bontell: The position of the sword, in this fine and interesting brass, differ somewhat form the usual adjustment of that weapon. It will be seen that the slab is powdered with small scrolls, which bear alternately the words JESVS. MERCY. The six shields (of which one is lost from the original) are all charged with the arms of de Brewys. Bontell, Monumental Brasses of England (1849). Description from 1971-72 exhibit catalog by Kathleen Cairns: "Wiston--Sir John de Brewys, 1426. In armour. The slab is powered with 31 scrolls, one missing, bearing the words "Jesus Mercy." INSCRIPTION: Here lies Sir Jon de Brewys former Knight who died the 29th day of the month of November in the year of our Lord 1426. On whose soul may God have mercy. You were witness of Christ--this stone lies here. May this body be at rest but the spirit be remembered. You who pass on by the way however great you may be offer your prayers for me--Lord Jesus grant grace and mercy." From the catalogue An Exhibition of Medieval Brass Rubbings by Kathleen H.
