Published Description

From the catalogue, An Exhibition of Medieval Brass Rubbings by Kathleen H. Cairns. "William, Vicount Beaumont and Lord Bardolf, 1507. In mail skirt or early Tudor armour. His head rests on his tilting casque bearing his heraldic devices. His coat of arm is over his head. He stands on an elephant which carries a castle on its back in which stand three men. The count had no sons so they may be men at arms. Under the count's feet is a snail or a caterpillar or a broom-cod. This seed pod of the broom plant is the Planta Genista. The allusion here is to Lord Beaumont's connection with the Plantagenets, the House of Lancaster."
